Baja Fresh Goes Green with Serving Products

In December 2009 Baja Fresh, a company known for making some of the tastiest, fastest and freshest burritos around, launched its “Earth Fresh” initiative program. The purpose of the program was to ramp up recycling efforts for the company while also preserving natural resources.

The company tested the program by implementing the use of more eco-friendly serving products in eight of its California restaurants. These products included recycled paper and plastic bags, unbleached burrito wrappers and biodegradable plates.

After receiving positive feedback from customers and employees, Baja Fresh has decided to expand the Earth Fresh program to all 255 restaurants it operates across the country.

So, what exactly are the green features of the serving products? They include:

  • Unbleached burrito wrapping paper made from 100% recycled material
  • Unbleached paper bags that use 70% postconsumer material
  • Plastic bags made from 50% recycled material

According to GreenBiz.com, “The company estimates that using the unbleached product instead of bleached paper contributes to a 46 percent reduction in wastewater, a 21 percent drop in wood pulp use, 16 percent less solid waste and a 10 percent cut in greenhouse gas production.”

To even further this green crusade the company is looking for greener alternatives for its cups, cup carriers and plastic bowl containers.
